Why does the wire break in the WEDM?

Medium wire cutting is one of the WEDM machines. Its working principle is to use the continuously moving molybdenum wire (called electrode wire) as the electrode to carry out pulse spark discharge on the workpiece for metal removal and cutting. Molybdenum wire can be used repeatedly as the necessary consumable of the medium wire cutting machine. However, abnormal wire breakage may occur during processing, which requires inspection and maintenance by operators. Today, I will summarize the causes of wire breakage in the WEDM machine tool
 
Internal cause of wire breakage of medium wire cutting machine
 
1. The parameter setting is unreasonable. When the processing current is large, the molybdenum wire is easy to break.
 
2. The proportion of cutting fluid is not appropriate. Too small flushing fluid will lead to severe discharge conditions and can not effectively flush into the cutting seam. In addition, it is also necessary to regularly check the adequacy of cutting fluid to keep the circulation channel unblocked.
 
3. The accuracy of guide wheel is abnormal (especially the support guide wheel). When the accuracy of guide wheel decreases, it is easy to cause molybdenum wire breakage.
 
4. The conductive block has worn grooves. The groove caused by wear is easy to clip molybdenum wire, so it is necessary to adjust the position of the conductive block frequently and replace the conductive block in time to prevent wear.
 
5. The accuracy of the medium wire feeding and conveying mechanism has decreased. The wire conveying mechanism of the medium wire cutting machine tool is mainly composed of a wire storage cylinder, a wire rack and a guide wheel. When the accuracy of the wire conveying mechanism decreases (mainly the transmission bearing), the radial runout and axial movement of the wire storage cylinder will be caused. The radial runout of the wire storage cylinder will reduce the tension of the electrode wire, resulting in wire looseness. In serious cases, the molybdenum wire will be pulled out of the guide pulley groove. This requires frequent inspection of the wire conveying mechanism.
 
External causes of wire breakage of medium wire cutting machine
 
1. If the quality of molybdenum wire is qualified, molybdenum wire with uneven thickness and poor material is easy to break.
 
2. If there is any deformation of the work-piece to be processed, sometimes the molybdenum wire will be clipped when the product is deformed during processing. To avoid the deformation of the material during the cutting process, it is necessary to optimize the processing technology. During the processing, the threading hole shall be pre-processed, the stress shall be released by pre-cutting, and the cutting path shall be optimized.
 
3. The surface of the workpiece material is oxidized or there are impurities in it, resulting in non-conductivity. This requires checking the materials to be processed and removing the non-conductive impurities before processing.
 
4. Whether the molybdenum wire is installed properly. If the molybdenum wire is installed too loosely, the molybdenum wire jitters severely, which will not only cause wire breakage, but also directly affect the surface roughness of the workpiece. However, the molybdenum wire cannot be installed too tightly. If it is too tight, the internal stress will increase, which will also cause wire breakage. Generally speaking, the newly installed molybdenum wire should be tightened before processing.
 
5. The workpiece is not clamped in place. If the workpiece is not clamped in place during processing, it is likely to cause displacement and wire breakage. Therefore, the workpiece must be fixed during clamping.
 
In addition to the above reasons, short circuit, component wear and improper operation can also cause wire breakage in the thread cutting machine.
